What about customs procedures?
You will need to go through customs as you return to the United States.  For visitors overs 21 years of age, 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars and one liter of spirits or wine is allowed.  Purchases amounting to over $400.00 will have to be itemized and may be subject to duty charges.  Be sure to keep all receipts handy.

The ship offers telephones in each cabin.  All calls made to locations outside of the ship will be charged at the current rate offered by Norwegian Cruise Lines.  Information on current rates come standard in each cabin.

What's not included for which I can expect to pay?
All personal travel expenses, such as activities you book on your own, phone calls, additional food, trinkets or spirits purchased onboard and dry-cleaning or laundry services, are your responsibility and must be paid for upon disembarking.

What about currency and credit cards?
Traveler's checks in U.S. dollars are the currency of choice, as they can be replaced if stolen or lost.  You can exchange them as needed.  Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, will give you the best possible exchange rate, and are a great way to track travel expenses.  You may also wish to bring a small amount of local cash with which to pay street vendors.

What is the electrical voltage?
Standard voltage is 110 volts, the same as in the United States.  However, voltage irregularities are quite common - sometimes providing less, sometimes providing surges of far more.  For this reason, expensive appliances and computers should have surge protection if used on this trip.

Athens, Greece; and Ephesus, Turkey are both on Eastern European Time (8 hours ahead of MST)

What will the weather be like?
September in Venice and the Mediterranean brings average temperatures of 70-75*F

Should I lock my checked luggage?
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may need to open your checked bags in order to perform a random security screening.  If your bags are locked, TSA will break the locks during the screening process and does not assume liability for damage this may cause.

TSA-recognized locks, which can be opened by TSA using tools provided by luggage-industry members, help prevent the need to break locks.  However, TSA-recognized locks are still occasionally broken during the screening process.  If you want to guarantee that your checked bags are not forced open, leave them unlocked, but make sure you carry all documentation and valuables with you.

How much luggage can I take?
Most carriers now charge a fee for luggage.  In general you will be allowed up to two (2) checked bags, one (1) carry-on bag that must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, and one (1) personal item such as a purse or a laptop bag.  However, please check with your airline to confirm the current luggage limitations and any applicable fees.

As a reminder, please do not pack your valuables or things you will need within the next 24 hours in your checked luggage.  These include, but are not limited to, your passport, credit cards/cash, laptop, phone, camera, jewelry, glasses, contact lesses and solution (note size limits), and medication.

Please be sure your bags are checked through to your final destination airport.

What items can I carry on?
Due to recent security issues on flights heading for the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has updated its aviation security measures.  For an up-to-date list of items banned from carry-on luggage and items you can carry on, please visit: http://www.tsa.gov/.

What should I pack?

  • Khakis and jeans
  • Walking shorts
  • Bathing suit
  • Collared shirt, sports jacket, and dress shoes for evening functions
  • Polo shirts, short-sleeved shirts, and t-shirts
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunglasses, visor/hat, and sunscreen

When should I arrive at the airport?
Recommended international check-in time is at least three hours prior to departure (depending on Homeland Security threat level).  Please call the airline or access the airline's website to check for schedule changes/flight delays and reconfirm recommended check-in time prior to leaving for the airport.

How can I obtain a Passport?
Your local post office will be able to tell you where the nearest passport agency is.  US citizens will need a certified birth certificate or naturalization certificate and a government-issued photo ID.  You will also need two passport photos, which can be taken at most any photo studio or photo lab, or even Costco.  The current fee for an adult US passport is $135.00, excluding any expedite fees.  Typical processing time is approximately six weeks.  If you chooses to pay the expedite fee of $60.00, typical processing time is only two weeks.  You can download current passport applications via the internet by accessing:  http//travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html.

What documentation will I need?
All passengers must have a passport valid for six months beyond the return date for this trip.  Birth and naturalization certificates are NOT acceptable forms of identification.  Please carry your passport with you at all times.  We also recommend packing a photocopy of the picture and signature pages of your passport.  If your passport should get lost, the photocopies will make it much easier to get an emergency replacement.  For further information about federal documentation requirements, please visit: http://travel.state.gove/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis_pa_tw_2223.html.
